Graduated in Economics at La Sapienza University in Rome, he studied international economy at Columbia University in New York and at the Institut de Hautes Etudes Internationales in Geneve. Moreover he obtained a master degree in Business Administration at the Columbia University. In 1982 he joined Banca d'Italia where he worked for the Research Department and from 1986 to 1988 he was appointed Assistant of the Executive Director for Italy at the International Monetary Fund in Washington. From 1988 to 2003 he worked for Banca d’Italia taking on different responsabilities in Rome and Paris. From 2003 to 2006 he was appointed Chairman of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti S.p.A. and from 2007 to 2009 Chairman of F2i S.g.r. From 2009 to 2016 he has been member of the Italian Competition Authority.
